Here are the stats according to New12 right now:
PASS 1,566 48.1% FAIL 1,692 51.9%
Michael Cucci* 2,107 Ann-Marie Sturniolo* 1,898
*Unopposed
# of voters compared to last year:
2007 4,077 2008 3,258
A 20% decrease in voters.
Why the decrease in voters? Was it the weather? A difficult budget? Too many undecided?
Does anyone know how many years it has been since Wantagh had a NO budget vote?

If you add up the # of votes for BOE candidates, it equals 4,005. If you add up the # of people who voted for the budget, it adds up to 3, 258. That's a difference of 747. Did 747 people come and vote for BOE candidates and not vote on the budget? It seems weird. Bottom line, a NO vote for this district is a shame.

ourkids, there were two candidates to vote for. So the total number of voters is likely the sum of the yes and no votes.

What a shame! Thanks to all who voted NO for some very depressed children tomorrow....look forward to HUGE class sizes and NO after school activities. Even Plainedge passed,I guess you learn from your mistakes.... Oh well, maybe you will all wake up now and rally for more state aid.And by the way only 18% of the community came out to vote,HOW SAD......
I WOULD ALSO LIKE TO THANK NEWS 12 FOR SPEWING MISINFORMATION...

This is a sad night for the district. It's also sad how many people voted no and probably didn't even have the facts because they didn't attend any of the meetings that the BOE held. Also a little confusing that more people voted for the BOE candidates then voted yes for the budget. So you think they should continue what they are doing, but you don't like the budget they but together. Also, if Sally is still online, what misinformation is News 12 reporting. I know that the BOE said they would not do a re-vote, but with the number so close maybe they will reconsider.

Sportbooster,Sound bites that did not tell the WHOLE story.....Thats it. But the real sad part about this is only 18% of the community took part in this vote...Where the heck is the other 82%,asleep at the wheel...My children and their friends are in tears... As for a re-vote,only time will tell.Part of me wants a re-vote and part of me does not..I almost hope the community feels the pain,I am willing to suffer thru it. For the good of the community in the long haul.Sad but true, but what a sad day for the kids....

I think this town is in for a rude awakening when they start to realize what has happened. The heart of Wantagh is the school district and there are going to be hard choices that will be made that will effect our kids.

I think more than 18% of the population voted. Wantagh 18,971 population (includes under age 18 which is about 5,000 and the 18-24 year olds are about 2,000) 6,179 households 5,213 families Here's some links including census bureau data that I got the stats from: www.wantagh.li/statistics/1603678146.pdfWe should probably have a statistics and research thread on this board.

The 18% info came from the board of electors, that was present at the vote count....Just an FYI

We musat encourage the BOE to do a re-vote and we need to get information out to 70% of the community that did not vote. They will wake up tomorrow and feel bad because they probably thought it would pass with no problem. In this case every vote really mattered. Will the BOE hold a public meeting about a re-vote? I really hope they will give it some thought.

Thanks Sally. I wonder why the Board of Electors is so off from the 2000 Census Bureau.

so Wantagh Parent, given the Newsday quotes below, how did Wantagh wind up with a 7 - 8% budget increase/tax levy this year?Officials in many Long Island's school districts could boast of relatively low -- or nonexistent -- tax increases. Lawmakers poured state aid into school district coffers, contributing to an average proposed tax increase of 3.87 percent -- the smallest since 1998.
In fact, six districts are proposing tax decreases.
State aid to Long Island districts increased for the second straight year -- $236 million more than last year, an increase of nearly 10 percent.
