Robocalls and emails should be out by now. From the district: ______________________
Good evening, this is Michael Cucci President of the Wantagh School District Board of Education. I am calling to inform you that the Board has approved the leave of the Superintendent of Schools Philip D. D'Angelo, Jr. effective Friday, September 14, 2012. As this is a matter of personnel, we are prohibited by law from providing any additional information.
Effective Wednesday, September 19, 2012, Forest Lake Elementary School Principal Maureen Goldberg will assume the responsibilities of Acting Superintendent of Schools. Once a decision has been finalized, the Board of Education will appoint and announce an Acting Principal of Forest Lake Elementary School.
Please be assured our number one priority continues to be the success of our students. We are confident Mrs. Goldberg will execute the responsibilities of her new position with the highest level of professionalism and commitment. ______________

I have nothing of which to inform anyone concerning this.
I have gotten calls from around the Island with offsetting speculation that runs the gamut of possibilities, and thus collectively cancels itself out completely.
There is a factual truth to this saga which Chris Wendt does not presently know. I am not attaching my name to idle, speculative guesswork on this.
The Board of Education has to deal with this, and I support their efforts for the good of our school district. By any measurement, this is a momentous development, and they could use your support at this critical time as well.
Godspeed to Maureen Goldberg. She is a good choice and I am glad that she has agreed to step-up.
Sincerely,
Chris Wendt

This not acceptable and the BOE owes the community more than we cannot discuss. This now 5 supers in a year plus. Is this a way to run a $70 million business?

I totally agree. Disgusted. The myth of the Wantagh school district. This district has only disappointed me since I've moved here, 9 years ago. It is mediocre at best with taxes that should afford us more and better. And, if this has anything to do with the Mel incident it makes me even sicker. Regardless of how beloved Mel is in the community the Board had no option but to fire him when he threatened to blow up the school. The community outpouring of love is touching but the attack of the board at the meeting was uncivilized and disgusting. If he is leaving because of this this community should hang its head in shame. If he is being forced out because of his decision to protect the school by firing an unstable person, again, shame on us, Wantagh. We needed an influx of new blood around here...now things will remain the same as always,, business as usual, never able to see beyond our nose.

Does anyone know if our current BOE members are still making unauthorized visits to the schools during working hours? Just a thought, but someone should have to pay for this mistake, I'm thinking a resignation by a BOE Trustee would be appropriate.

What is an 'unauthorized visit'? Are the BOE members not allowed in the schools during school hours?

My understanding is BOE Trustee collectively runs our school system, but individually they are just taxpayers just like everyone else in the community. Furthermore, when an individual arrives at any school unannounced, that individual must report to the main office to notify the staff and sign in and out when leaving, so to create a record of their presence. Anyone that doesn't follow this policy is on school grounds illegally, even BOE members.

BTW, they are allowed on grounds, need to sign in and out.
Mommymomo, question if you found out that an individual board member was on school grounds for 1 hour daily and during visit was taking up precious time with our superintendent, what would you think of this?

As I said with the last Super incident before this one, what is the point of having employment contracts unless they are enforceable by either party???

The BOE should be able to answer whether Mr. D'Angelo's leave is paid or unpaid.
In the past year or two, we've had: Begley Marsh Bonuso redux D'Angelo and now Goldberg
The Mel BOE meeting was raucous. The BOE president chastising the audience barely 2 minutes into open comments set the tone for what followed. Apparently, he fell a bit short with 'know thy audience' in controlling the crowd.
Regarding Mel's firing, as I've stated before, the district fell way short in allowing an employee, particularly an employee with a disability, to be bullied for so many years. They look incompetent and that is a cultural leadership thing, not something that can be put on Mr. D'Angelo's 2+ months at Wantagh. It was poorly handled given the FEAR that was put into special ed parents, despite robocalls and district website postings on The Dignity Act. Apparently, it affected the rest of the community too.
I don't know if Maureen Goldberg is brilliant for staying out of the political fray or if that inexperience will be to the district's detriment. Dr. Sternberg sent out a controversial parent letter regarding testing and cutting kid activities. Where was district leadership gauging the effects of that? Why is one elem school run so differently than the other two? (We have an asst. super for instruction in place.) The Mel situation happened. (The super only suspended Mel, acc to the BOE meeting, it was the BOE who fired him (twice). And where was Mel's union?) We're now a few years behind in identifying a permanent sup who theoretically should have vision and leadership.
I'll take a wait & see attitude, but quite frankly time's a wasting...

Oh, and amending my post to say I don't know if they events I mentioned are related to Mr. D'Angelo's leave. Rather, the district remains in a state of influx.

I hope the new ex-super gives notice he is taking legal action against the district & has his attorney contact the media...Probably the only way the residents will ever hear the truth......
