Here is an interesting real life story about applying physics, mechanics, forensics, and materials science to art: the restoration of a major marble sculpture, "Adam" (Tullio Lombardo), which shattered into pieces at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 2002, and which is now on display, there, through July 2015.
