Source article: Charter School Airing (LI Herald)Whether you are a proponent or an opponent of the Common Core (concept, curriculum, assessments, etc.) you probably recognize the generally crappy test scores spawned across the state, and certainly right here in Wantagh, over the last two years. Crappy scores, whether caused by a crappy curriculum, or crappy teachers, or crappy teacher leadership, or crappy tests, are still crappy, meaning, expensive crap. A well-heeled Charter School operator wants to take advantage of the crappy results in Lawrence (Nassau County, Five Towns area), and operate a charter school along the lines of more upscale and affluent private academies in Manhattan. The unions and the other school district faithful are up in arms over this proposal. The Regents could approve the plan, or kill it, before the end of the year. There are other factors at work in Lawrence involving religion that do not exist here in Wantagh. However, if a charter school takes root in an upper middle-class, white community in Nassau, such as Lawrence, then the impetus to make a trend out of this will be irresistible to Charter School operators.
Wantagh could become a prime opportunity for an upscale charter school complete with a headmaster and other accouterments of an expensive Day School, because we have two elementary schools with mostly empty seats, and, the requisite crappy test scores abound in the lower and middle grade levels, where a Charter School could be pitched as potentially doing the most good. Competition in public education? Regards, Chris Wendt
