NYS Eductation Commissioner John King has ordered a special election for one seat on the Hempstead Board of Education, after previously nullifying the results of the May election on the grounds of alleged voting irregularities involving that seat. He had also removed the (former President) of the Hempstead Board of Education, Betty Cross, who had originally been declared the winner of that contested election. No date has been set for the special election, and the Hempstead Board of Education took no action at last night's Business Meeting. The term of the seat in question expires June 30, 2015.

The Hempstead Board of Education has scheduled the state-ordered re-vote for one seat on the Board to be held on October 28th. The previously unsuccessful challenger has announced she will definitely be running. The ousted "victor" in the first election (vacated by SED Commissioner King) is not sure if she will run in the special election, or not. The term for this seat expires June 30th, 2015.
In related news, class size in the Hempstead Middle School is up around 50: "Some math, social studies, science, language arts and other courses in the seventh and eighth grades have up to 50 students...."
Hempstead UFSD experienced an unexpected enrollment increase of 15.6% this week, up by 1,112 students to 8,200 presently, from 7,088 in June!
Phenomenal.
