At their reorganization meeting last evening, the Hempstead Board of Education passed over their controversial long-time President and elected Lamont Johnson as their President. Johnson, an alumnus of Hempstead High School, is a retired police officer (NYPD, Hempstead Village PD). Newsday noted: "We are going to move forward on a positive note," Johnson said afterward, adding he wants to improve the district's reputation so that parents will feel confident about sending their children to Hempstead schools. I personally wish this man success.
In keeping with their usual bad form, however, the Board elected the controversial former president as "Board Treasurer", and she, true to form, did not hand over the gavel or control of the meeting to the newly elected President Johnson. Not out of the context of Hempstead's dysfunctional performance in almost every metric, including financially, the Hempstead Board seems to regard the District Treasury as "The Board's Treasury". You can't make this stuff up. Goldilocks I could make up, but not this Hempstead stuff! Still shaking my head. Chris Wendt
