Despite all the hub-bub and bad press about changing grades, and missing grades (by the thousands) in the Hempstead School District, and the principal of Hempstead High telling the State Education Department that he was unable to certify this year's graduating class, they ultimately finalized their graduate list moments before the ceremony. The "graduation rate" was omitted from the Newsday report, but by comparison to the official 2013 numbers, Hempstead High graduated two (2) more students (224) than last year's 222 graduates. The final number and the graduation rate for 2014 are subject to audit and verification and official reporting at a later date as part of the State School/District Report Card program.
It is expected the Hempstead graduation rate will be about 50%. However, noting that the number of graduates includes several who "graduated" in January, it is possible that Hempstead (and Newsday) are referencing what is known as the "Five-Year Cohort Graduation Rate", instead of the traditional and more meaningful and properly comparable "Four-Year Cohort Graduation Rate". Regardless of what face they attempt to put on a 50% graduation rate, this is still appalling. Their four-year cohort graduation rate will be computed and reported by NYSED, regardless; but the one-year Hempstead High Principal will have been long gone by the time that happens. (Today is his last day on the job).
Shaking my head slowly,
