The Central Islip Board of Education adopted a budget with a TAX DECREASE yesterday! The C.I. BoE was acting in response to last month's Audit Report from the Office of the Comptroller of the State of New York which cited the district for (deliberately) underestimating revenue and (deliberately) over-budgeting expenditures for the last 5-6 school years, amassing $25 Million of surplus funds while taxes increased 9% during the same period! The surplus funds were partly used to finance each successive year's spending. While the budgeted spending adopted yesterday increased by 2.42% over the current year's budget, the Board pledged to give back $7.5 Million from their unlawfully hoarded reserves to taxpayers, for a Tax Levy DECREASE of 0.83%!Oddly, the 7-member C.I. Board was split 4-3 in favor of adopting this budget. The three (3) dissenting members said there was a lack of transparency (behind-closed-doors decision making), and that the deliberate over-budgeting was still continuing, with many lines in the newly adopted budgeted being unreasonably inflated, meaning the same unlawful practices are continuing, there. Ringing in my own ears are those H & R Block commercials with that catchy slogan: Get Your Billion Back, America! Get your millions back, [Insert Name of YOUR School District, Here]! Chris Wendt
