(I realize this is in the wrong discussion area--OT Wantagh--since it is Wantagh-specific, but the other topic has a fairly urgent discussion on-going.) The... WANTAGH SCHOOL DISTRICT ANNUAL FINANCIAL STATEMENT FOR FISCAL YEAR ENDED JUNE 30, 2013 ...is available on Page 15 of the Wantagh-Seaford Citizen edition of Thursday, December 12, 2013; Volume 61 Number 50. You can obtain your copy at 7-Eleven and other local outlets for 75-cents, until this Thursday, December 19th. This public information is NOT AVAILABLE at this time on either the District Website or the online edition of the W-S Citizen. The implications of this are that you cannot presently obtain a digital copy suitable for analyzing or sharing. I think you can call the Business Office (516-679-6308) and request a digital copy. The email address of the Assistant Superintendent for Business is silverad@wantaghschools.org Chris Wendt

Chris, really important. There was a one pager on a Capital Reserve Fund resolution distributed at the BOE meeting. It looks like it will be adopted at the Jan. 14th meeting, then put up for vote in March. I do not know whether this is available online.
Also attached to the 12/12/13 BOE agenda is a budget calendar with budget workshops in it.

I have to give my response careful thought, Lilly. There are pluses and minuses which need to be weighed. More, here, after I have had time to mull this over.

I too am studying the numbers for the past couple of years. Have some concerns that need more verification.

Has anyone seen the proposed budget numbers yet? Since the vote yesterday approved the reserve fund has the BOE indicated how much of existing reserves will be transferred?

I was told at the Budget Workshop the other night that the numbers will be available at the next Budget Workshop which is 3/27 @ 7PM. Would be nice if it was sooner

bnjasper, spoke to the asst super for biz day of vote and asked the same question. She said the vote was purely to establish the cap reserve fund, not the transfer of $ into it.
Transferring $ into it will be the BOE's call, not hers. She did say there are no plans to increase the proposed 2014/15 budget for the reserve and couldn't comment on historical surpluses/reserves that could be transferred into it. She positioned the cap reserve fund as a motivation to spend efficiently as that savings could be placed into the cap fund reserve. Also, community will have to vote on specific projects/funds to be taken out of cap reserve fund.
Since we do have surpluses/reserves each year (overbudgeting) and already have hefty reserves, your question begs to be answered publicly in one of these budget workshops.
Also, two budget workshops and low attendance/involvement so far.

kathyt, did they say whether it was the proposed budget or an accounting of current reserves that would be available in the 3/27 meeting?

The proposed budget is what we were asking for. I would like to see the current reserves as well.

I put in the request to the asst super for biz, cc'ing the BOE, for a recap of reserves with discussion for the 3/27 meeting yesterday. Haven't heard back yet. It would be helpful if others did as well.

Curious how the attendance has been at these meetings? I haven't been able to attend and haven't seen much chatter on here or on any of the other sources. Has anyone been to one of these yet? I may be able to go tonight but still unsure...

I have not been able to attend, nor have I spoken to anyone who has attended. Frankly, since they changed the format and eliminated the Budget Advisory Committee (BAC), I have lost interest in this part of the process. What does that mean, then? Well, for me it means that I trust that the BoE will put forth their best effort, which will distill down to a percent tax levy increase, which I will compare to the "Two-Percent Tax Cap", and, if it's under two percent then I will vote for it, and if not, then I will vote against it. I always do vote, and generally 'Yes'.
