Having decided to close two elementary schools at the end of this school year due to declining enrollment, the Half Hollow Hills Board of Education has adopted and published a new attendance zone map for their remaining five (5) schools. This was no mean feat, due to the fact that the district's racial and ethnic demographics are mixed, which complicated the closing decisions as well as the new attendance zones in order to balance diversity, cost, and travel time after this year. Parents are upset, appealing to the State Education Department, and had been protesting. However, as the article notes, last night's meeting was quiet and sparsely attended. I think they are getting with the idea over there. It is important for Wantagh folks to note that the two schools that were closed in HHH were NOT the two smallest schools, and were NOT the two schools that had lost the most students in recent years. Logistics and other factors predominated the specific closing decisions. Story, new map (link).Chris Wendt
