One of two teams of semifinalists from Hewlett is advancing to the final round of the Siemens Science Competition, with their work on genetic research.
Significant is this statement: "Students at Hewlett conduct research entirely within the school's labs; in many other districts, students work at nearby universities and outside research centers."
The article (link) also lists the names and schools of the other LI semifinalists.
Wantagh parents should think long and hard about both the importance and the availability of advanced science and technology research opportunities, here.
Who are Wantagh's partners in advanced science and technology research? What are Wantagh's advanced science and technology research courses?
Wantagh is a component district of Nassau BOCES, and a lot of your tax dollars are paid by the Wantagh School District to Nassau BOCES, yet, BOCES only offers a half-baked, half-day STEM program, up in Syosset. Wantagh does not participate in this BOCES program.
Why doesn't Wantagh partner with Seaford, Island Trees, and Plainedge to form an advanced science and technology research program?
A STEM Consortium! Oh, it would take time away from teaching to the tests?
Well, then how about doing the scientific research at night, or on weekends, or over the summers? Or are we just going to stick with the occasional individual student hooking up with this or that university and doing the occasional individual research project now and then? Think about how YOUR kid could connect with that kind of random opportunity, I mean unless you, yourself are connected with this or that university, in which case, then, for what would you need the Wantagh School District's participation?
