Lake Ronkonkoma NY.
Sachem School District, the second largest on Long Island, had its budget defeated in May, unable to "pierce the tax cap". They will be having their second and final budget vote next week on a budget lowered to within the allowable tax cap. If that revised budget fails, then Sachem will be unable to increase their tax levy at all for next year. Even if the revised budget passes, massive staff reductions will be needed to meet the new spending plan,
Interesting to note that full-day kindergarten was on the chopping block, but THE STATE gave Sachem an extra $640K to save that program. In addition, THE STATE gave Sachem a $535K GRANT because they have "kept administrative costs LOW"! What a joke! However, the joke is not at all funny when you realize that extra $1.2 Million going to Sachem is YOUR state tax dollars, and, MONEY that will NOT be coming to other school districts (like Wantagh) in the future.
Does this mean that THE STATE believes that the Sachem School District is too big to fail?
Farmingdale NY.
Nassau County IDA granted a Texas developer $38 Million, 20-year tax breaks for two (2) mixed use residential & retail projects near the Farmingdale train station. This won't cost Nassau County anything, but the taxpayers of the Farmingdale School District will be paying higher taxes for the next 20 years to make-up for the tax revenue foregone.
Not laughing....
