Read the Story on W-S Patch (hyperlink)I think the material was cut-and pasted from the WUFSD website. Good to see this finally happening. Speaking with a PTA leader in a nearby district my interest was piqued when I learned that their FDK programs in two schools were as different as day and night. As she described it, the one school had many of the concepts Wantagh will be shooting for in our new FDK program. But the other school has exactly the opposite of what Wantagh will be striving for in September. That raises an interesting question for Wantagh, where our three elementary schools have each been relatively independent of one another for decades. Who and how will the FDK program be monitored to insure parents that their child will receive the maximum benefit from having FDK, instead of something a whole lot less? The description of a whole lot less, as related to me by the parent from the other district, resembled half-day K plus half-day day care. To simplify, perhaps think of half-day K only with two extra hours available to do the same old stuff, or, plenty of extra nap time. Which brings me back to the question, how will Wantagh guard against sub-optimization of our brand new FDK program? And the tangential question, how will YOU know? (Where's the accountability)? Two new principals should be a good thing, here. Especially with a new Superintendent who was an Elementary Principal herself until recently. Food for thought, cupcakes for snack time! Chris Wendt
