I am not talking about my favorite Roy Orbison hit, I am talking about the superintendent saga. Read all about it, and my reaction, on Patch (hyperlink). I think Maureen Goldberg should finish out this school year, now as Interim Super, and that the search for a permanent Super should not start until after the new board is sworn-in in July. Maureen should certainly be considered for the permanent assignment, but not as an expediency. Doing that would not be fair to her or to the District. Chris Wendt

I spent a good deal of time of the phone today, and have posted the following comment on Wantagh Patch, which I want to share with you, here. "Sometimes when you have specific questions, it is appropriate to go to the source and ask. I have learned from Mike Cucci that the official resignation of Mr. D'Angelo was the result of a negotiated structured settlement which will cost the district ten percent (10%) of Mr. D'Agelo's initial contract. I have ascertained that the cost of this settlement has not negatively impacted any programs or staff, with most if not all of the money coming from the TANs (Tax Anticipation Notes) adjustment, as the result of good fiscal management which reduced the need for TAN's this year.
In my opinion, had the matter languished in legal process, the cost to the district would have exceeded the cost of the eventual settlement several times over.
While no one should be happy about this episode, it is now concluded, and in the best manner for all concerned. That means it is over, and the parties have signed-off on it." It will really be good to put this behind us. Sincerely, Chris Wendt

Yes it is over for most, another person paid to go away keep your mouth shut and don't tell anyone and then we don't have to tell anyone either.. and we will pay you to go on and do what ever it was you were accused of and hope you don't do it to someone else. As long as its not in Wantagh it's not our problem. So is this what defines Wantagh? Sorry Chris I disagree with you, I think it's disgusting but will not forget to say hello to everyone at church on Sunday,..

There are a few people presuming that D'Angelo was guilty of something, and in their opinions, since he must have been guilty of whatever it was that we paid him not to talk about, that he will do again whatever he was accused of doing, here, someplace else. I posted the following on Patch this morning: We should recognize the facts here. One, D'Angelo's contract was on the District website and many people have read it. If anyone thinks they read "some 'out' in his contact that allowed him to leave and get paid", then please post it. (There isn't one).
Two. D'Angelo was placed on leave with pay by the District, who then hired an investigator. More than a year Approximately 3 months elapsed, and the investigator filed his report with the District.
Three. In the latter phase of the District's investigation, Mr. D'Angelo was hired by another school district as their Superintendent, and for a period D'Angelo was collecting salary from two districts, while Wantagh was paying two superintendent salaries. Wantagh was obliged to pay D'Angelo as a matter of due process and the presumption of his innocence of whatever the underling issue or allegation may have been which triggered his being suspended and investigated.
Four. Two month's of negotiations ensued between the District and D'Angelo which resulted in a structured settlement being reached between the parties. This settlement resulted in D'Angelo being remunerated for submitting his resignation, ending his employment relationship with Wantagh, and defining and reducing Wantagh's potential liability to D'Angelo. This settlement came on the heels of a lengthy professional investigation, and followed D'Angelo's being hired in another district for the same job.
We will never know the details of the original issue. Let's move on. While this episode played out in Wantagh, I don't think it defines Wantagh in any way other than by the Board of Education having acted professionally, responsibly, and lawfully throughout its entire long and difficult course. Chris Wendt Edited to correct timeline; Mr. D'Angelo's leave was announced in September. 2012. -CE

I don't disagree with the timeline, Your opinion is your own and I don't agree, their are more then a few people that know (not think) why an investigation was initiated in the first place. My opinion of the BOE on this matter is that they are hiding behind the legal excuse, covering up a something which isn't nothing for an investigation to be called, If we the public taxpayers keep closing our eyes it will just continue, i question where are their morals?but you are right it is time to move on to the next saga.

Chris, your ex-BOE orientation is showing again. (Or, maybe it was some kool-aid? In life, until you understand where you've been, you don't know where you are going to. I don't think the BOE understands where they have been. All we are lucky about is this didn't make the papers like Hempstead did Thursday (7 super changes in 8 years and $320k to settle with recently ousted super). Beyond the settlement with Mr. D'Angelo, there are other costs to the district - headhunter, legal and special investigator fees plus a major hit to Wantagh's reputation as a viable employer for senior admins. And while we may never publicly know what the allegation was against Mr. D'Angelo, the special investigator paid for at public expense turned up nothing based on the fact that he was not released from the contract without a due process case but did get a settlement. So, is it over? No, we're just onto another chapter of 'As the Wantagh BOE Turns'. And, I have ZERO confidence in their ability to select another super with the educational vision we need, the kids deserve and the taxpayers expect. They had a great chance with Mr. D'Angelo, based on the stellar reputation he came with to Wantagh, and blew it big time.

PS Doing the same thing over and over (super changes) to the same effect (they leave and/or forced out) is typically called *crazy*.
