The US Birth Rate hit an all-time record low in 2011 at 12.7 births per 1,000 people. This was reflected in a 4% decline in the number of births recorded, 3,953,593, down 4% from 4,131,019 in 2009. This will have serious economic implications in the future. As a frame of reference, children born in 2011 will graduate from high school as the Class of 2029. Newsday cites declining enrollment as an Island-wide phenomenon, and not something that is going to reverse itself anytime soon. ...hyperlink to full storyWantagh should very seriously consider implementing full-day kindergarten to buffer against the effects of continued declining enrollment, which eventually could result in having to close one of the elementary schools in several years.
