Two (2) LI students have been named Intel Finalists. One was from Smithtown and the other from Kings Park. Kings Park is slightly larger than Wantagh with 3,800 students vs. 3,500 (round numbers) for Wantagh. Smithtown is more than three times the size of Wantagh at 10,700 students (all under one Superintendent). Each of these districts spends almost the identical amount per student: Smithtown....$19,813 Wantagh......$20,000 Kings Park....$20,789 The major financial difference among them is the tax levy $ per student: Smithtown......$4,299 Wantagh........$4,857 Kings Park......$5,000 This indicates better fiscal efficiency for Smithtown, probably due to the economies of scale, with Smithtown having three times the number of students under one administrative umbrella. That efficiency translates into better educational value for Smithtown's students, as there are more tax dollars available for non-administrative purposes, yet fewer tax dollars per student required to run the district. Read All About It! (hyperlink to Newsday article)The very interesting projects the two finalists did were done in collaboration with professors at Stony Brook University. Maybe someday, again for Wantagh? Hopefully, Chris Wendt
