The question was asked regarding the status and cost of superintendent situation. The specific question was how much is this costing us including expenses such as paid search firm fees, investigators, due process/legal, relocation, paying double salary and where is it coming from? The answer was to put the request for a tally in writing and they are looking for closure asap due to expenses.
An observation was made regarding 5 supers in technically less than a year, the poor reflection on the district and how it hampers our ability to attract a qualified super in the future. The BOE president discounted that statement by saying Begley doesn't count since she was with the district for 10 years beforehand and both Marsh and Bonuso were interims so by definition they don't count either bc they were never supposed to be permanent. So, we're basically talking D'Angelo and Goldberg, kinda just 2 supers in a year. Lulzzzzzz..... It totally escaped the BOE president that such churn at the top is typically perceived as bad management that typically demands answers in any organization.
The BAC has been dis-banned given the 2% tax cap. Instead there may be town hall meetings and budget workshops.
It was also questioned why Wantagh El and its PTA were making political statements 'representing Wantagh' since it brings up things like inconsistency among the 3 elem schools, time spent on that is time taken away from the kids, etc. It was clarified that that action was not endorsed by the BOE and it was left unclear as to the role whatever super we had in place at the time had anything to do with it.
The status of Mel Turner's re-hire pending a psych eval is still pending and they didn't know or wouldn't quote timing when they expect the completed report.
Teen Nights remain in jeopardy due to not enough volunteers.
There will be an audit committee comprised of 3 community members and 2 BOE trustees. The BOE is interviewing community members for the committee.
The BOE remains enthusiastic about the declining enrollment/full day Kind committee, results expected in Dec.
Lastly, Wantagh has been what's the right word here? ....not in compliance with state regs by making parents pay for textbooks for college level and AP courses. Beginning 2012/14 the district will have to budget for those textbooks, estimated at $100k (~1/3+ of current textbook budget). The question was asked about AP test fees too, since some districts pick up the tab for that. Another question was about the scientific calculators. The district spent $90k on calculators to be compliant with state regs yet parents are still expected to buy them acc to supply lists. So, question was where is this stockpile of calcs, and how come they are not being used by the students? Since we've paid for the calcs in the budget therefore through taxes, then again by buying them for our kids, we are effectively paying for two calcs per kid.
