Way back in 1993, NY State extended the National School Lunch Program to include a mandatory free and reduced rate BREAKFAST Program to be established in every public school no later than September 1, 1995.
In the sixteen (16) years the Free & Reduced Rate BREAKFAST Program has been in effect for Wantagh, how much money have we spent on this program?
Answer: $0.00 <-WRONG!
Well actually, it was more like $8.35, which would closely approximate the cost of the sixteen #10 envelopes, the sixteen pieces of 8-1/2 x 11-inch paper, and the sixteen postage stamps used to file--and secure--the sixteen annual exemptions that Wantagh received from this unfunded mandate.
So, the lesson of the day is this. If you have an unfunded mandate that you do not believe should apply to YOUR school district, then file for an exemption. That is one excellent form of ADVOCACY!
Hey, you never know.
