it tolls for thee. Meaning, bad news affects us all. And as in John Donne's Devotion Upon Emerging Occasions, a bell tolling in our home town tolls for us right here in Wantagh. Don't go listening for any bell, though; this is more like Churchill's 'jarring gong of self-preservation'.
Unlike Donne, I am not writing about a death. But the incident on my mind certainly could have easily ended in a violent death within two blocks of the High School-Middle School complex.
This one has really gotten to me. A rather recent Wantagh Alumnus arrested for armed robbery, meaning, pulling a stick-up with a gun. Just how bad are the problems facing Wantagh's youth that any one of them should come to this eventuality?
Sure, this young man was no longer a student, but it has not been that long by any measure. A review of his social media friends list turns up many of your children's names, and a number of siblings of current Wantagh students.
This particular young man was an athlete and left Wantagh High for a good college.
My personal interest is in understanding the real extent and depth of the problems on our streets and on our campuses, and perhaps by understanding and learning, to formulate better strategies for the future of Wantagh's young adults.
This young man is certainly innocent unless proven guilty. If he was culpable, then he certainly will have to answer for his own choices and face any consequences for his actions.
If there are other kinds of actions required to straighten out this situation, I am certainly interested in discussing any or all of them.

Really upset.
