Once again, Wantagh is absent from the Intel Scholarship semifinals. However, this year is far different from all prior years. Previously, it was easy to excuse ourselves from this and similar competitions by pointing to the rich kids from the mega-wealthy gold coast school districts and glibly remind ourselves, our children and their parents, and our taxpayers that, after all, this is Wantagh, and Wantagh is NOT Jericho, Manhasset, Half Hollow Hills, Herricks or Port Washington. But NOT THIS YEAR! One of semifinalists is a homeless girl from Brentwood High School. But that is not the worst of it, for Wantagh not being this or that or some other reason not good enough to compete. Levittown, Bellmore-Merrick, Oceanside, Massapequa and Valley Stream all have semifinalists this year. Can Wantagh honestly say we are not (as good as) Levittown? Bellmore? longisland.newsday.com/templates/simpleDB/?pid=391We once hired Bob Black to get Wantaqh into these competitions. Unfortunately, Mr. Black had a health issue and left before getting the program started. That was the end of that. Oh, sure, we don't have the money. Because, instead of spending our tax dollars on the children, we spend it on salaries and benefits and.... A homeless girl...from Brentwood. Now, let's talk about spending what money on which children. Bring it on! Chris Wendt

Each of BMCHSD's three HS's were represented by 5 finalists in total. And, there is often snobbery about Levittown here in our wonderful town, yet McArthur was represented and doesn't do badly at all in other competitions either. (As an aside, Levittown announced they were doing away with HS class rankings in line with other LI HS's who were doing the same. Their reason was the same "gripe" discussed here a while back - that a kid with a great grades could wind up with a low rank bc so many kids have honor roll averages.)
Back to the Brentwood young woman, so many people were struck by her the response has been overwhelming. This is one of those stories where I hope a rich benefactor steps up to the plate and helps that family out of their bind. The parents are doing something right with their kids despite their misfortune. And let the college scholarships roll in for her.
Hello Wantagh? Anybody listening? Award winning, "very good school district"... Need to back that up regularly and save the rhetoric.
