Happy New Year to all who visit here!
The spark for writing this came at 8:00 AM EST, Saturday morning, December 31, 2011. At that precise hour fireworks were lit off over New Zealand, welcoming the New Year 2012. It would be another 16 hours before the ball would drop from above Times Square, and still 3 hours later the New Year would show itself in the clock faces on the West Coast, and even later in Hawaii and Alaska.
Watching the various celebrations as they occurred in Sydney, Dubai, Hong Kong, Beijing, Taipei, Tokyo, Seoul, Moscow, Berlin, Paris, London, New York and Los Angeles gave me a new appreciation for how paradoxically big and small our planet is.
In addition to the instantaneous communication in high-definition video and sound, the commonality among the people of the Earth could not be ignored. Not so much the fireworks, although they painted over with the same gaudy light the varied iconic structures of so many world capitals, but the laughter, the cheers of hope, and the singing of Auld Lang Syne.
We are the world.
All the best for the New Year!
