Smithtown is having an un-American, unconstitutional DO-OVER VOTE today, Monday, September 19th.
The subject of this travesty of representation and perversion of the one-person, one-vote hallmark of American democracy is busing eligibility.
In May, a referendum to save $800,000.00 by increasing busing eligibility mileage was passed by the voters in the Smithtown School District. Well, now that school has started, the chunky little Smithtowners don't want to walk to school, and their parents don't want to drive them. So, those effected parents pulled together, in the easily recognizable style of a 225-pound gorilla, and filed a contravening petition for a "DO-OVER" vote.
The school leadership is all giddy that, in the event this vote passes, they can start busing the little chubba-wubbas as early as next week!
Now for some critical thinking. They can't increase their tax levy by $800,000, can they?. Oh, wait, being in Suffolk County, I think they can increase their tax levy up until October!
But what if this was NEXT YEAR, and Smithtown was already at or over the TAX CAP? They couldn't use this one-off election to exceed or further exceed the (so-called, ersatz, full-of-baloney) Tax Cap, could they? Well, it is NOT next year, and there is no tax cap (not even a b.s. make-a-believe, pretense of a tax cap) in-force, now. For the answer to that question, we'll all just have to wait and see.
Smithtown is a large district and I am sure this election is costing them a bundle. I wonder what they will cut to make up for the cost of holding the "DO-OVER" vote.
Nah, just kidding. I don't really wonder at all: they won't cut anything. They will just shave their projected unallocated fund balance to cover it. That's one of the beautiful things about over-taxing the populace and hoarding other people's money so THEY can spend it as they see fit.
"Budget? We don't need no STINK-ING BUDGET!"
Chuckling to myself...
