There will be an 8:00 'Meet the Candidates' night tomorrow in the WHS cafeteria.
Although there will be no "debate" as has been typically offered in prior years, voters will have the opportunity to meet the three BOE trustee candidates and ask them questions.
Monday 4/9 8:00 WHS Cafeteria
We hope to see many people there!

This is the only time we can find out anything about the candidates? The board doesn't post some kind of questionnaire they all have to fill out or anything on the website?

The Citizen had some of this last week...Newsday usually has something the Sunday before.
If it wasn't for this forum, I wouldn't have heard about this. Where did school district have notice of this?

The district only updated the website today for Meet the Candidates night.
They are listing the time as 7:30-9:30 (not 8:00 on as reported above).
This what the district website posted today:
Wantagh Union Free School District Monday, May 09, 2011 - 07:30 PM - 09:30 PM Candidates' Night This informal 'meet and greet' is your opportunity to meet the candidates for the upcoming School Board Election and hear what they have to say on the issues facing the Wantagh School District. Location: Wantagh HS Cafeteria

It would be interesting to find out what anyone learned, or if anyone formed a different impression after meeting the candidates.
Did you feel there value to this program, in the opinion of those who attended?
Interested....

After 150+ reads, the stunning silence seems to confirm what I have heard from two of the candidates; paraphrasing, a complete waste of time.
But what do they know?
I think it proved reasonably well that each of the candidates is fully capable of sitting in the same room together and with other Board members and the senior administrators for long periods at a single stretch. Two of the three of them will will be elected next week and will join the Board in July. All three of them may eventually get on the Board.
From my point of view, this shindig was an uninspired undertaking that resulted in no-harm, no-foul to or by any of the candidates. The voters lost out on having a debate, which is a shameful cop-out.
Having passed on attending, I think I came out ahead, personally.
However, out on the mean streets of our little borough, sign wars have erupted, and well-intentioned but really thoughtless people have inspired and engendered new levels of aggravation around the neighborhoods.
How to get your neighbors ticked-off at YOUR candidate?
1. Put up signs on their front lawn for candidates they do not support, or even for candidates they may support, but without their permission.
2. Sneak-up under cover of darkness and remove signs from their front lawn, which they put there to show support for 'their' candidate(s).
This is very petty stuff, but believe me, there is a load of pettiness going on, and it is generating more animosity toward candidates than you may imagine.
We should all be better than that, eh?
Let there be peace in the valley!

Yup Chris you came out ahead by not going. You could've packed in some more calories, like I did, based on the spread of cookies and snacks.
It definitely was a missed opp'y with no debate and not worth the time at all. Gave the regulars a chance to chat & catch up, but that's about it.

I made a comment on the patch's candidate videotaping story and it was deleted.
The comment was:
There are 3 candidates running for 2 seats; the incumbent, Mr. Cucci, is NOT running for his own seat, but he is contending for either of the 2 seats with Mr. Zerner and Mr. Soethout, all on an equal basis. The top 2 vote-getters win those seats, which are not differentiated from one another in any way. Voters should NOT be led to believe that Mr. Zerner and Mr. Soethout are pitted against each other, head-to-head, to decide which one of them wins the seat being vacated by Mrs. Sturniolo. It is entirely possible that both Mr. Zerner and Mr. Soethout will be the two winners of the two seats in contention.
It was deleted. Although some of the patch's articles are good, like chris's pov and there was another on sports by a wantagh parent, there is lots of spam in the comments sections as well as too many complaints that comments are too frequently deleted. I don't see any issue with my comment or why it was deleted.
Therefore, I'm having issues with the patch's objectivity and journalistic integrity. Shame, it could've been something good but not with those actions.
