Challenging the mantra of teacher unions, Bill Gates has been studying effective teachers and has made the following findings public: - "Step" raises have no effect in the classroom (money wasted)
- Educational credit raises for teachers have no effect in the classroom (money wasted)
- teacher seniority has no relationship to educational success ('longevity' raises, money wasted).
- Smaller class size is not effective in improving results: better teachers take on larger classes and produce better outcomes; better teachers who do take on larger classes and then produce better outcomes should be paid better for doing that.

I like Bill Gates. Beyond his business success, he is apolitical and pro-education. He puts his $ where his mouth is and is one of if not the largest philanthropist of our time. Haven't found anything yet about him that indicates his 'for the kids' (or more accurately, well educated kids) is less than altruistic. He is seriously concerned about education and its impact for the future of the country.
I saw this segment on ABC World News also. I was wondering about the study behind those statements like the controls and #'s. Would like to know more.

i think bill gates should stick to building computers. i agree with most of what he says after all people can do any job regardless of money.teachers make there salarys because they are required to have masters degrees and phd for admin. what other job requires u to have that.
i do feel classroom size matters a teacher can spend more one on one time with a smaller class than a larger class.of course if it where a class full of bill gates it wouldnt matter how many kids where in a class. but kids all learn at different levels my kids are not in high school yet but i am an advocate for small class size.
