On Saturday, December 4th, a judge certified a recount of ballots in the 7th Senatorial District election, declaring Republican Mineola Mayor Jack Martins as the Senator-elect, defeating incumbent Democrat NYS Senator Craig Johnson. This event assures that the Republican caucus will be in the majority in the NYS Senate for the next two years. Senator Charles Fuschillo, therefore, in January, will once again become a majority Senator of all committees on which he serves, which currently include: - Civil Service and Pensions
- Commerce, Economic Development and Small Business
- Consumer Protection
- Health
- Transportation
- Labor
You will recall, with some trepidation I presume, that candidate Fuschillo promised to enact a 2% Tax Cap as the central piece of his campaign platform. That was an easy promise for a minority Senator to make, having no control--being in the minority--over the outcome of any such legislation. But in January, Senator Fuschillo will certainly be able exert a great deal of control over Tax Cap legislation as a member of the Senate majority. It is expected the Senator Dean Skelos, R-Rockville Centre, will become the Senate Majority Leader. Having a Long Islander in charge of the Senate legislative agenda should be a positive value for Wantagh. Time will tell. Years ago we did quite well, when LI Senator Ralph Marino served as Majority Leader. Let's watch an see how this goes! Chris Wendt
