While I understand what you mean completely,in this case there was a vote and it was approved by the vote..So now we move on and get what was approved by the community...

Sally, yes I understand that it was approved by the vote. Which I still don't understand why the state lets the schools vote as many times as needed until the budget or bond passes. The other thing is what would happen to the bond money from last year if the budget doesn't pass this year?
I am still not sure on how I feel about the budget this year and that is why I have been so involved, but I have to say I feel as though I get a song and dance with responces to any of my questions (not from this site). I think Dr. B has some great moves and is light on his feet when it comes to answering some of the more difficult questions for the school.

Hi THIS IS IN RESPONSE TO PARENTINWANTAGH,The bond items go forward regardless if the budget passes or not..It is included in the budget this year as debt service and will be included in a passed budget or a contingency budget.I am trying to give you just the facts and I hope I am helping you out...I am really glad that you are asking, because by having straight forward info can only make the right decision for you...The items the community voted on all go forward...

Sally, it appears that you have a lot of knowledge and I appreciate that. Thank you for clearing up my questions. I just wish I got some of these answers a long time ago when I first asked them instead of getting a song and dance.

in reply to parentinwantagh -
the State Legislature mandated a Education Voting Day(s) a few years ago; unlike a bond proposal, each year's budget gets one or two tries, the second only if the BoE decides to re-submit to us: tomorrow's May 20th vote might be follow by a re-vote day month:
No district is compelled to hold a budget re-vote, but if it does, it must be held on the third Tuesday in June (Education Law ยงยง1804(4), 1906(1), 2005, 2006(1), 2007(3), 2601-a(2),(4))

This district historically has not had re-votes for BUDGETS,simply because they feel they put out their best POSSIBLE budget the first time and it costs the district an additional $10.ooo.oot to put up a re-vote, we simply do not have the extra money..so vote like there will be no re-vote,because in all probability there will not be one IF it is not passed.....

sally, r u saying that if the budget doesn't pass we won't have a re-vote. cause if you think about it we really don't have enough money, right?
Another question is when was the last time our school had a 10% increase? (I know they say it's only 8%, but it will actually come to at least 10%.)

If the budget doesn't pass I very much doubt there would be a re-vote.
As far as the increase is concerned,if you back out the debt service for the BOND,the actual increase is in line with many other districts...We approved this bond as a community and now we are living up to it.
We are not outspending, but are taking care of needs for this district thru these bonds. The only way for the district to get in the bond dollars which we approved is thru the budget...If you back out the debt service,Approx 2,000,000.00 and every 600,000.00 equates to about 1%,it works out, mind you I rounded down the bond figure. So the approx actual budget w/o a bond debt would be APPROX!5-6%.....
We have one of the lowest operating budgets in Nassau County!

Sally, play with the numbers all you want, the public is voting on 7.75 year to year increase. This is out of sync with the current economic conditions.

Sally is not playing with the numbers, it's the facts. These bonds were voted on by the community and will be a part of these bugets for years to come. When you back out the debt service, the budget is in line with other districts increases this year. So when people want to know what they are getting for their money this year, they have to look at the bond items that are being implemented.

It just seems like we have bigger problems like underfunded academics - Thanks, lilly for this quote - it seems like a good summary of one of many problems.
By the way, the BAC had a sub committee of people who looked at teacher contracts last year prior to negotiations with the teachers. The Board took many of those recommendations and used them.
This year, a committee did look at other contracts that are forthcoming and made recommendations to the Board as well.
The BAC does listen to the Community and tries very hard to represent all the people and all the issues of our District. The BAC does make many recommendations to the Board. If you want to get involved on the Budget next year, come join us. But, understand, it is not an easy job and not always easy to make the recommendations that we do. It is still the Board that make the final ones.
Understand, too, that at least 75% of the Budget is contractual. All the BAC can do is make recommndations for the future.

If any child in the middle school wants to play a sport, they should be allowed -- no one at this age level should be turned away. Can't we get volunteers like PAL does to run intermediate sports and play against local schools. Not only with todays obesity rate being so high, for a child to get on any sport makes them feel part of a school team and raises their self esteem.

Can't do it due to rules and regs (I think NYS ones).
