It's great to have all these regulations it's too bad that the school district or the state ed fail to follow them

Yup, sometimes I think the parents are more educated about Sped laws than the school personnel.

If you don't have a child in special ed you aren't aware of what is going on and you probably don't care. Well I don't have a child in special ed but I do have a good friend who does and he was forced to take his child out of the Wantagh Schools because Wantagh doesn't have a recognized program to educate their child. This is outrageous! What happened to no child left behind? As you can see there are very few comments left in this section as is the fact that there are only small amount of children in need therefore Wantagh feels they don't have to spend the money to get the proper programs to give these few kids the education they so deserve. If it is just one child we owe it to that person just as if it could be anyone of us. Wantagh schools has a huge problem here and it better change its policy.

Last night I attended the board of Ed meeting. Dr. Bonuso along with some members of the board state that Special education has increased our budget due to a million dollar increase. They are however forgetting to tell the public that they recieve additional state aid to off set the cost of educating children in these programs.Make no mistake the Wantagh school district does not do what is right for the child unless it is cost effective for the district. So the child suffers. In my opinion If your thinking about buying a house in Wantagh You should check the inside of the school before you buy and you should pray you never have a special needs child because you will not get the services your child needs.

Wantagh Schools will get over 1million increase for Special Ed. see (Re: Combining the 7th and 8th grade teams « Reply #34 Yesterday at 9:55am »)
Is this School capable of doing what is necessary to correct its deficiencies with-in the Special Ed program?
Is this enough money when added to the current budgeted amount to get all things accomplished?
Do you or anyone else know how much money is in the budget just for Special Ed?

I have the special ed numbers 07-08 actual budget numbers:6,165,640 08-09 proposed numbers 7,242,364 difference of 1,076,724 needed from the new proposed budget to support the program and its students These numbers were taken from the proposed budget summary that was sent to homeowners..I am always glad to get correct info to you... The only way to get the 1 million dollars more needed is through the budget...Thank You,I hope this clears it up for you

Sally, the budget brochure says that of last/this year's $6,145,640, $45,000 was transferred to the special aid fund. For next year, although the special ed spending is going up to $7,242,364, there is a bigger transfer going to the special aid fund - $125,000 or +$80,000. Why did the transfer of special ed $ to the aid fund go up so much? What is the district targeting more reserve money for? Doesn't sound like the kids. Why are they anticipating they will need more reserve funds? Doesn't that mean that the proposed special ed spending increase that directly affects the kids is lower than the stated $1,076k?
For perspective comparing to neighboring districts, Wantagh's percent of spending on special ed remains lower than Seaford and Massapequa even with this large 2008/09 increase.
Also, I heard that the state ed department was supposed to make an announcement about special ed on 5/15 but delayed making that announcement until after the 5/20 votes. A lot of districts are proposing large increases in special ed spending this year. So, I wonder if the two are related and this proposed increase will be spent on the K-12 kids or if the state wants districts to start paying a portion of pre-school expenses in 2008/09. All that is purely unconfirmed speculation but I am curious what the state ed is going to announce though.
