...can Wantagh's teachers be far behind?
The Wantagh Board of Education will, on Thursday, April 23, approve contract modifications and extensions with six (6) groups of employees, excluding the teachers. There are two possibilities to ponder in this scenario:
1. All six of these employee groups have agreed to make concessions to save the district money this year and next, which the Wantagh Board, like the William Floyd Board, will just be ratifying those give-backs, with their sincere thanks to those generous and considerate employees...(and the teachers union is working on granting an even bigger concession package which will undoubtedly be completed next month, before the budget vote on the 19th),
--OR--
2. The board has decided to grant all six of these employee groups big fat raises that the board had previously told the community they would not be granting, you know, due to austerity and the spending cap.
I sure hope it is scenario #1. Because I couldn't even imagine the backlash and the wrath that could result in the community if it turned out to be #2.
Let's wait and see...

Wm. Floyd teachers union to give up $1M to save jobs

William Floyd teachers are giving up $1 million in pay raises next year to save jobs - a decision described by Long Island union leaders as the first significant school contract concession since the recession began.
The school board is scheduled tonight to ratify the agreement, under which 731 teachers will give up $1,190 each from next year's paychecks, William Floyd officials say. Teachers' pay now averages $82,868 and was to rise next year to about $86,000.
In return, the district has rescinded plans to lay off at least nine teachers next year and has agreed to give the union a one-year contract extension through 2010-11 with a 2.5 percent raise that year, on top of annual step raises. Teachers "overwhelmingly" approved the agreement in a Monday vote, said a joint statement by the district and union.
"We are very appreciative that the teachers union has made this generous offer," said school board president Robert Vecchio.
