It is generally expected that the NY Board of Regents will pass a resolution requiring increased bilingual instruction in NY public schools "in 2015". The new requirement will be that, in any SCHOOL DISTRICT that has 20 or more students in the same grade level whose primary language, other than English, is the same, to provide mandatory bilingual instruction. As of the end of the 2011-12 school year, Wantagh UFSD had only 13 students designated as being of Limited English Proficiency, across all 12 grade levels, so it does not appear this new requirement will impact Wantagh for the near future.
I could see this requirement giving new impetus to Princeton Plan attendance zones in many NY school districts in the not too distant future, however. Although Wantagh may not be subject to the new bilingual instruction rule, if the Princeton Plan is re-invigorated around the state, then I think that concept will at least deserve careful consideration in Wantagh, just on its own merits, apart from the forthcoming bilingual instruction rule. My granddaughter attends a K-2 Princeton Plan primary school, and it seems a wonderful idea in terms of flexibility and delivering services and programs to students.
What do you think of the Princeton Plan concept? ....for Wantagh?
What variations on the theme would you like to see considered?
For instance, K-2 at Mandalay and 3-5 at Wantagh Elementary? Or, K-2 at Forest Lake, 3-4 and Mandalay, and 5-6 at Wantagh Elementary?
Thought provoking, no?
