(Credit: Newsday / Chuck Fadely) Using a quasi-legal parliamentary procedure called a "consent agenda", the Hempstead Board of Education laid-off 59 people before anyone in attendance knew what was going on; then they shut off the lights in the auditorium and told everyone to go home. Forty seven of those laid off were teachers, including 30 "classroom teachers", 11 "reading teachers", 3 Guidance Counselors, and 3 Attendance Teachers, plus two administrators and ten teaching assistants. In Hempstead, the Hempstead School District.
A "consent agenda" is a slick move where Board members agree to agree on all items on an agenda and further agree to pass them all in a single vote, and thus placing responsibility on the public to obtain and read the full agenda in order to try to understand what had just happened before their very eyes. To give you an idea of what that would be like, take a look at the last Wantagh School District Board Agenda (link) which comprises 56 pages! The Wantagh BoE does not use the "consent agenda" tactic. You can not make this stuff up! Chris Wendt
